Daisy, Luna: Albertans’ favourite names for their pets in 2025

Whether it’s a cat or a dog, Albertans loved naming their pets Daisy and Luna.

According to pet insurance company, Trupanion, these two names are among the top names for people’s pets in 2025 and going into 2026.

Daisy turned out to be the most popular dog name in Alberta and one of the top three in Canada, Trupanion says. It’s followed by Luna then Teddy.

When it comes to cats, Luna, is the most popular name for cats in the province, followed by Nova then Cleo.

“If there’s a movie or a TV show that comes out, you’ll see that name become really popular, but when we looked at Luna there wasn’t anything,” explained Nick VinZant, spokesperson for Trupanion. “It seemed like everyone just kind of congregated around Luna.”

Trupanion looked at names of more than 130,000 puppies and kittens over the last year both in Canada and the U.S.

Pet parents that CityNews spoke with say they like to call their pets funny and easy names, or after something that’s meaningful to them.

“Something that’s meaningful — there’s a story behind it — Person you love that you’re memorializing somehow,” says Joanne Griener, a dog owner, on her naming process.

In Adien Dubbelboer’s case, it was a matter of name matching the personality, when it came to her cat Daisy.

“She’s very outspoken, very opinionated, as you can tell, she has things to say,” Dubbelboer said.

“She came with us with the name of A.J. which we did not particularly like. So I don’t know how we managed to change that into Daisy but that’s what happened.”

VinZant says when pet owners pick a name for their pets, they should remember not to confuse the pets.

“You don’t want to try to teach Rolo how to rollover so you don’t want the names to be close to a command that you’re trying to give them,” VinZant said.
