The August long weekend is upon us, giving Calgarians an extra day to enjoy summer in the city.
Whether you’re planning to spend Heritage Day in the city, head to the mountains, here’s what you need to know about city services, facilities and transportation on the holiday Monday.
Golf courses
City driving ranges and all seven municipal golf courses will be open throughout the long weekend. Tee times can be booked online.
Government & public services
- Banks – closed on Monday
- Canada Post – closed on Monday, no mail collection or delivery
- Government buildings – closed on Monday
Landfills
Landfills will remain open under their regular schedules.

Parking
There will be free on-street ParkPlus parking on Monday. Weekend rates will apply at Calgary Parking parkades and surface lots.
Regular rates will remain in effect at partner lots, including TELUS Spark, Calgary Stampede, Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Calgary Zoo and Heritage Park.
The Calgary Parking Contact Centre and Impound Lot will be closed on Monday.
Recreation facilities/programs
The all city arenas, indoor pools and fitness centres, leisure centres, Maxwell Soccer Centre, North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre, and Wildflower Arts Centre will all be closed on Monday.
The North Mount Pleasant and Wildflower Arts Centres will also be closed Saturday and Sunday.
Registered programs and swimming lessons will not run on Monday, and drop-in programs will not be offered.
Road closures
Drivers should plan ahead and expect delays in several parts of the city throughout the long weekend.
Southwest
- July 31 to Aug. 2: 14 Street S.W. at 17 Avenue S.W. closed southbound, with two-way traffic on northbound lanes.
- Ongoing: 8 Street S.W. between 8 Avenue and 10 Avenue S.W. remains closed southbound for the 8 Street Project.
Northwest
- Ongoing construction impacts and delays along Memorial Drive due to the Sunnyside Flood Barrier project.
- July 31 to Aug. 4: Charleswood Drive N.W. between Chicoutimi Drive and 24 Street N.W. closed.
- Aug. 2-3: 19 Street N.W. between 25 Avenue and 27 Avenue N.W. closed for paving repairs.
- Aug. 3: Bowness Road N.W. between 62 Street and 66 Street N.W. closed for the Tour de Bowness event.
Southeast
- July 31 to Aug. 4: Ogden Road S.E. between Millican Road and 50 Avenue S.E. closed, with detours via Glenmore Trail, Barlow Trail and 52 Street S.E.
- Aug. 1-2 (overnight): Barlow Trail S.E. between the Memorial Drive off-ramp and 26 Street S.E. closed for the Chasing Summer event.
- Lane closures remain in place on 9 Avenue S.E. between 5 Street and 8 Street S.E. as part of the 6 Street Underpass Project.
Northeast
- Aug. 1-3: Eastbound McKnight Boulevard N.E. between Centre Street and Edmonton Trail N.E. closed, with two-way traffic operating on westbound lanes.
Shopping
Most major malls, grocery stores, liquor stores, and department stores in Calgary will be open on Monday, but same may be operating at reduced hours. Check your local store for their operating hours.
Transit
On Monday, buses and CTrains will operate on a Sunday schedule.
From Saturday through Monday, the CTrain along 7 Avenue S will be closed between City Hall/Bow Valley College Station and 8 Street SW Station for maintenance. Shuttle buses will operate downtown using stops along:
- 6 Avenue SW (westbound)
- 9 Avenue SW (eastbound)
Red Line riders will need to transfer to a northbound train at 8 Street SW and transfer to a southbound train from the south platform at City Hall/Bow Valley College.
Blue Line riders will need to transfer to a westbound train at 7 Street SW and transfer to an eastbound train from the north platform at CityHall/Bow Valley College.
Regular CTrain service is expected to resume at the start of service on Tuesday.
