A Calgary boy living with a serious illness got the chance to step into the world of his favourite movie heroes this week, thanks to the efforts of Make-A-Wish Canada and dozens of community supporters.
When asked by organizers what his one wish would be, seven-year-old Brent’s answer was simple.
“To be a Ghostbuster,” he said.
That dream became reality at the Calgary Stampede Grandstand, where a special Ghostbusters-themed adventure was created just for him.
Armed with his Ghostbusters gear and plenty of enthusiasm, Brent took part in an experience designed to make him feel like a real ghost-hunting hero.
The wish was granted through Make-A-Wish Canada, which helps create memorable experiences for children diagnosed with critical illnesses.
Supporters gathered to cheer Brent on throughout the day. Among those taking part was Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas, who embraced the theme by appearing as the famous Ghostbusters character Slimer.
“I was not going to be the mayor who was going to let Calgary become the most haunted city west of Winnipeg,” Farkas joked. “And to have an amazing new Ghostbuster on the scene speaks for itself.”
Volunteers said the event was about giving Brent a day he would never forget.
“It’s special to be able to make someone’s day, especially a little person’s day, especially somebody who may not have many more days,” one supporter said.
Make-A-Wish Canada often describes its mission with the phrase “Wishes Are Medicine,” highlighting the positive impact these experiences can have on children and their families.
