Traffic Safety
Be safe this Stampede and all summer long by knowing the rules about drinking, drugs and driving. Taking substances like alcohol and cannabis can affect your ability to drive. Impaired driving doesn’t just mean drinking — it also includes cannabis and other mind-altering drugs, being too tired, or taking certain medications (prescribed and over the counter) that can make it dangerous to drive.
Did you know:
· Most casualty collisions involving alcohol happen late at night on weekends, between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.
· During Stampede, it can become even riskier: on average, 15 pedestrians are hit by vehicles, with 22 per cent of those collisions happening downtown.
· Hit-and-run incidents increase by about three per cent, and pedestrian collisions that happen in the middle of the road (not at crosswalks) rise by seven per cent
· The risk of a deadly crash is 60 per cent higher during Stampede.

In support of the Calgary Stampede, several City-led construction projects downtown and on major traffic routes are making sure Calgarians can get around during the festivities:
o Reopened to two lanes of traffic (during peak hours) on June 10 with remaining work to be paused completely during Stampede for full access.
· Mission Bridge Rehabilitation
o Two-way vehicle traffic will continue with one lane in each direction, while pedestrian, walking and wheeling access will remain open.
· 8 Street S.W. Revitalization
o Work is currently limited to between 2 Avenue and 4 Avenue S.W.
o Roadway will be reinstated to two lanes of vehicle traffic, with some signage on site to keep the public safe.
o The river pathway will reopen for walking and wheeling.
o Street parking was permanently removed north of 4th Avenue S.W. along 8 Street last month and will not be reinstated. (Lot 6 is a convenient option on the north side of 4 Avenue.)
· 14 Avenue and 15 Avenue S. Mobility Improvements
o Roadwork on 14 Avenue S. is expected to be complete in time for Stampede with sidewalks and roadway open for use.
o Repaving work on 15 Avenue S. will be paused to allow for two-way traffic flow along the corridor. The intersection at 15 Avenue S. and MacLeod Trail will remain closed (per existing conditions). Pedestrians who need to cross MacLeod Trail will be detoured to the intersections at 14 Avenue S. or 16 Avenue S.
