Calgarians said farewell this weekend to a waterslide that, for many, was far more than just a piece of infrastructure.
Thunder Run, the six‑storey slide at Village Square Leisure Centre in the city’s northeast, is closing Monday as part of a major facility overhaul, prompting crowds to return for one final ride and one last rush of nostalgia.
The slide, which opened in 1994, has long been a rite of passage. Families remember the cold stairwell, the echo inside the blue plastic chamber, the sudden darkness in the “lights‑out” section and the final splash that signalled the end of a run and the start of a lifelong memory.
Many who showed up to say goodbye weren’t just revisiting a waterslide, they were revisiting childhood.
One longtime visitor recalled the winter chill seeping through the walls as water dripped from overhead tubes. Another laughed about racing friends down the slide in groups of five or six, a tradition that was never technically allowed.
Calgary comedian and actor Andrew Phung said Thunder Run shaped entire generations.
“This slide raised generations of kids,” Phung said. “I transitioned from being a kid that came here into a young adult that worked here. I think this place bonds an entire community.”
One Calgarian shared online that her grandfather volunteered at Village Square for years and helped build a model of Thunder Run in 1993, a point of pride he carried for the rest of his life.
“It is sad,” one visitor said. “There are so many memories for people, it’s more about growing up here and the memories you shared.”
Thunder Run’s closure comes ahead of a full renovation of Village Square Leisure Centre, with the facility expected to reopen in late 2027. Recreation team lead Bruce Ottway says a new slide is already in the works.
“The slide is going to be just as good, if not better,” Ottway said.
It may be faster. It may be smoother. But for many Calgarians, Thunder Run will always be the original.
