Calgary is getting a taste of professional women’s hockey.
The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is making its first-ever stop in the city as part of its Takeover Tour, bringing regular-season action to the Scotiabank Saddledome. Wednesday’s matchup features the Toronto Sceptres and Ottawa Charge, with just a couple of points separating the rivals in the standings.
And this contest comes with a homecoming: Calgary’s Carla MacLeod behind the bench as head coach of the Charge.
Calgary is no stranger to the women’s game. The city was home to the Calgary Inferno of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), who captured Clarkson Cup championships in 2016 and 2019.
More recently, Calgary hosted the 2021 Secret Cup as part of the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) Dream Gap Tour — an event that featured many players and staff now competing in the PWHL.
The league made the most of its stop in Calgary with a full slate of community events. Earlier this week, Toronto players Renata Fast, Sara Hjalmarsson, Anna Kjellbin and Jessica Kondas took to the ice at Father David Bauer Arena for skills clinics with minor hockey players. Both teams also held open practices at WinSport, giving fans a chance to get up close with the league’s top talent.

On Tuesday night, Cassie Campbell-Pascall hosted a coaches panel at the WinSport Hall of Champions. The panel included Toronto Sceptres general manager Gina Kingsbury and assistant coach Rachel Flanagan, along with Ottawa head coach MacLeod and goaltending coach Pierre Groulx.
Puck drop between Toronto and Ottawa is 7:30 p.m.
The PWHL Takeover Tour features 16 neutral-site regular-season games this season, played in cities outside the league’s current markets as it continues to grow the women’s professional game across North America.
