Authorities have charged a 44-year-old Edmonton man with uttering a death threat to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the social media platform X.
An investigation into an X user began in early September by the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) in Alberta.
A week later, Dwight Peter MacIntyre was arrested and charged. He is scheduled to appear in court in Edmonton on Nov. 25. The allegations against him have not been tested in court.
“People should not assume they can make threats online without consequences,” said Supt. Matt Johnson with the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region. “When online comments cross the line into criminal conduct, police will investigate and take appropriate action to hold those responsible accountable.
“Criminal online actions have real-world consequences, regardless of whether they are made behind a screen.”
