The province is investigating a stomach illness outbreak linked to a Calgary Kinjo Sushi & Grill location after several people became sick last month.
According to Alberta Health Services (AHS), four cases have been confirmed and two others are considered probable, all involving people who reported eating at the chain’s Mahogany location on or around Sept. 18.
Health officials say people who ate or drank at the restaurant on Sept. 18 or 19 may have been exposed.
AHS says testing has identified the bacteria involved as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), which can cause gastrointestinal illness.
Inspectors visited the restaurant on Sept. 28 and found no critical health violations. No other cases have been linked to the restaurant at this time.
The restaurant remains open as the investigation continues.
Symptoms of STEC can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Most people recover without treatment, although dehydration is a common complication.
Anyone experiencing symptoms is being advised to call Health Link 811 or contact a healthcare provider.
