The downtown site for Hampton Inn by Hilton required a rather unique infill design between a commercial building and small parking lot. NORR was the architect working collaboratively with Triple One and a geographically diverse team of consultants to conceptualize a design that considered the hotel brand, guest demographics and site constraints requiring pre-built steel framing.

The result is a striking and eye-pleasing tower with a dynamic exterior featuring mesh façade treatment with gold-coloured aluminum panelling.

Hampton Inn by Hilton will integrate well with the public and resident guest experience, thanks to a setback in a faceted manner of the ground and second floor. It allows for an animated and inviting frontage zone, which opens to a porte cochere that combines a one-way driveway and pedestrian access to the hotel drop-off and main entrance.

The tight site also resulted in several innovative solutions related to vehicular access, including valet parking via car lift to below grade triple-high vehicle stackers.

Retail was originally planned for the main floor but the entire space has been devoted to a Kohler showroom. The boutique hotel design features Kohler-branded guestrooms — 12 per floor. Chen says that it is possible to rent a whole floor, in a busy part of the city directly across from the Calgary Courts Centre.

The second floor has hotel office space and a kitchen to serve hot breakfasts, including the brand’s famous waffles. It also boasts a Plus-15 connection. Half of the 15th floor is for administrative offices, and the 6th features conference spaces and fitness facilities.
